KAYA SCODELARIO never dreamed she’d land the iconic character of Cathy in Andrea Arnold’s gritty version of Wuthering Heights.

“I didn’t think I’d fit in or that I was ready for a role like that,” she told us. “I’ve never really been able to relate to period dramas, but I knew Andrea Arnold would project a raw passion and that’s just me all over. I went to the audition, and I’d had a bad, bad day. I’d just broken up with my boyfriend and wasn’t feeling great; angry and sad. There was no line-reading, you just had to talk into a camera and give your X Factor story, but it was actually a one man therapy session. Then I got a call saying I’d got the job.”

The former Skins star was given firm instructions not to read the book or see any of the film adaptions – including the famous version starring Laurence Olivier as wild, tortured Heathcliff, but she and her co-star James Howson seem to have mastered the passionate, wild love the story is based upon.

“We stayed very true to the ages of the book, when you fall in love at 14, or when you’re a teenager, it’s different to anything you’ll ever feel again in your life,” she said. “There’s this beautiful innocence and you’re just surrounded by it all. I’ve fallen in love and had my heartbroken, and of course it was different to Cathy, but I understand that feeling where you lose yourself. You stop talking to your friends, something in you changes. I find it easy to act being in love. I’ve experienced that and analysed it. Most people think of Wuthering Heights as romantic, it’s really not about that at all.”

The film was set in the desolate, bleak moors of Thwaite and Hawes in Yorkshire, the perfect scene for director Andrea Arnold – whose films are known for their gritty realism.

“It couldn’t have been filmed anywhere else,” said Scodelario. “The moors have this weird energy, they trap you. No special effects could have replicated the way they looked. One day the fog was so thick I couldn’t see the end of my arm. It was freezing cold, but magical. Learning the accent was the scariest part of all though.”

The 19-year-old had been knocked back from previous period drama roles, namely the BBC’s adaptation of Emma – which eventually starred Romula Garai.

“I got to the audition and there were all these beautiful blond girls with perfect accents, looking immaculate – it was really scary,” she said. “I just sat there in my trackie bottoms shaking. In the end I left crying. I’ve always had confidence issues, I just get scared of doing things wrong. But after that audition I thought to myself ‘That is the last time I let myself build barriers around something.’ So far, it’s worked out.”
